All You Need to Know About: Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namaha

ABOUT THE MANTRA

This mantra is named after the Goddess Lakshmi, who is traditionally identified in Hindu mythology as the Goddess of Wealth, Prosperity, and Abundance. The Lakshmi Mantra is recited to know your goal and as a means to fructify that goal. This Mantra is also called Money Mantra.

MEANING OF THE MANTRA

”Om greetings to the great Goddess Lakshmi Fortune.”

But this soothing mantra is a prayer not only to gain financial prosperity but also to give us the intelligence and wisdom to enlighten our minds with understanding. Lakshmi is the personification of all that brings good fortune, prosperity, and beauty.

ABOUT THE GODDESS

Lakshmi is depicted as a beautiful Goddess of golden complexion, with four hands, sitting or standing on a full-bloomed lotus and holding a lotus bud, which stands for beauty, purity, and fertility.

Her four hands represent the four ends of human life: dharma or righteousness, “kama” or desires, “artha” or wealth, and “moksha” or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

She shows the “abhaya mudra” or the “gyan mudra” with her right hand and holds a potful of gold in her left arm and paddy sheaf in her left hand.

Cascades of gold coins are seen flowing from her hands, suggesting that those who worship her gain wealth. She always wears gold embroidered red clothes. Red symbolizes activity and the golden lining indicates prosperity.

PRAYERS

Apart from the autumnal celebration, Lakshmi, along with Alakshmi (her shadow energy), is also worshipped during Diwali night in some Bengali communities. Goddess Kali of Kalighat in Kolkata is worshipped in Mahalakshmi form during Diwali

HOW TO PRAY TO HER

Lotus flowers, sandalwood, vermilion, betel leaves & nuts, fruits and various sweet preparations made from jaggery, rice and coconuts are used for her ritual worship. According to tradition, people would put small oil lamps outside their homes on Diwali in hopes Lakshmi will come to bless them.

She is the goddess of beauty and loves cleanliness, hence we all clean our homes during Diwali.

In many areas of India it is customary that, out of respect, when a person’s foot accidentally touches money (which is considered as a manifestation of Lakshmi) or another person’s leg, it will be followed by an apology in the form of a single hand gesture (Pranāma) with the right hand, where the offending person first touches the object with the finger tips and then the forehead and/or chest.

This also counts for books and any written material, which are considered as a manifestation of the goddess of knowledge Saraswati.

  1. The Lakshmi mantra is a powerful one. I have personally experienced the after-effects of chanting this mantra. We were financially struggling for some time. Our debts kept rising, and I didn’t know how to tackle it. I turned to doing poojas and chanting mantras. Om Shreem Lakshmiyei Namah is one the most potent mantras that put our family back in the line. We got better jobs and cleared our debts in a short period.
